Our South Napa estate vineyard in the rolling hillsides of the San Pablo Bay is the source for our 2005 Pinot Noir. This 100-acre marine influenced property is subject to the cooling breezes and fog similar to the Carneros region which lies just to the west. This microclimate is considered to be ideal for the Burgundian varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Approximately 40 acres have been planted to an assortment of different Pinot Noir clones--a total of ten separate blocks which are individually picked and vinified.
WINEMAKINGFor Pinot Noir, winemaker Joe Shirley incorporates extensive seed removal into the cap management process as well as oxidative rackings during the barrel aging period (nine months in mostly used French oak). This allows the tannins to polymerize more fully, creating larger, softer tannins out of smaller, more aggressive and angular ones. It also helps release the aromatic berry character inherent in the grapes.
WINEMAKER NOTESExpect ripe, open flavors on the palate with strawberries, sandalwood, cola and earth. The nose is focused and bright, the texture is soft and generous and the finish is long and complete.
